March is when spring stops whispering and starts shouting. If January was the runway and February the liftoff, March is the moment the landing gear folds in and the plane climbs hard. The 木 (mù) — Wood element — that stirred gently at 立春 now reaches peak intensity. Wind picks up, sap rises, and the 肝 (gān) — Liver system in TCM — drives everything: your energy, your mood, your appetite, your patience.
This month holds two solar terms, a dragon festival, a clock change, the equinox, and Easter. It is also the month to watch your home's East sector carefully — the 2027 flying star chart placed Star 7, the Robbery Star, in the East, which means the instinct to "activate spring energy in the East" needs reining in. More on that below.
Here is your complete March field guide: dates, energy shifts, home tasks, body care, and the things to avoid.
March Energy Map
| Dimension |
February |
March |
| ⚖️ Yin-Yang | Yang returning, yin receding | Yang in rapid ascent. By 春分 (Mar 21), day and night reach equal length — the midpoint before yang dominates. |
| 🌡️ Temperature | Cold with occasional warmth | Swinging. Warm afternoons, cold mornings, unpredictable wind. 春捂 (chūn wǔ) — stay layered — is the rule. |
| 🌳 Element | Wood emerging | Wood at peak strength. Green, growth, upward and outward movement dominate the landscape and the body. |
| 🫁 Organ Focus | Liver waking up | Liver is king. Support the Spleen (Earth) as a counterbalance — excess Liver qi can overwhelm it. |
| 😤 Emotion | Restlessness, cabin fever | Irritability, impatience, frustration. The Liver's emotion is anger — it rises with spring qi. Movement and time outdoors help. |
| 🍲 Diet | Transitioning from winter warmth | 省酸增甘 — ease off sour, add mildly sweet and neutral foods. Light soups, greens, pears, yam, jujube. Less heavy meat. |

Home Feng Shui Checklist
The 2027 annual flying star chart shapes every sector decision this month. Here is the March-specific action list:
| Area / Sector |
Action |
Why |
| 🧭 East (Star 7) | Keep clean, quiet, and uncluttered. No wind chimes, loud speakers, or sharp metal decor. A small vase of fresh flowers in water is the classical cure. | Star 7 is the Robbery Star. The natural instinct to "wake the East for spring" can activate theft, loss, or conflict energy. Let the East rest this year. |
| 🧭 SE (Star 8) | Activate: bright lighting, daily use, fresh plants. Earth-element accents (ceramics, crystals). | Star 8 is the Prosperity Star and it sits in the traditional wealth sector. This is where your spring growth energy should go in 2027. |
| 🧭 S (Star 4) | Fresh flowers, books, creative projects. A gentle water element (flowers in a vase) nourishes this Wood star. | Star 4 governs romance and academics. Good for students, writers, and anyone cultivating a relationship. |
| 🧭 SW (Tai Sui) | Gentle dusting only. No renovation, drilling, or heavy furniture moving. | 太岁 (Tài Suì) sits Southwest in 2027. Disturbing this sector classically invites misfortune. |
| 🪟 Windows | Open windows daily for 10–15 minutes (weather permitting). Let spring qi circulate. | After months of sealed winter air, your home needs a fresh qi flush. March wind carries growth energy — invite it in briefly. |
| 🚪 Entryway | Switch winter doormat for a fresh one. Clean the front door. Add a small green plant. | The 口 (kǒu) — Mouth of Qi — sets the tone. A clean, bright entry invites spring's upward energy into your home. |
March Body Rules
| Rule |
What to Do |
Why It Matters |
| 🧣 Stay layered — 春捂 | Don't strip off winter layers too fast. Keep the neck, lower back, and feet covered in the morning. Peel layers by afternoon if warm. | 春捂秋冻 (chūn wǔ qiū dòng) — bundle in spring, chill in autumn. March mornings are still cold, and wind carries external pathogens through open pores. |
| 🌅 Rise earlier | Shift wake time 15–30 minutes earlier than winter. Aim for sunrise or just after. Morning light resets your body clock. | The 黄帝内经 says spring calls for "rising early and walking broadly." Longer days mean earlier waking suits the season. |
| 🚶 Move more | Walk outdoors daily — the tradition of 踏青 (tàqīng), treading the green. Gentle stretching, qigong, or yoga to keep Liver qi flowing. | Stagnant Liver qi causes irritability, tight shoulders, and headaches. Movement is the best free medicine for Wood season. |
| 😤 Manage frustration | Expect shorter patience in March. Take a walk before responding to conflict. Journal in the evening. Green time outdoors calms Liver fire. | The Liver's emotion is anger. When Liver qi rises unchecked, irritability, jaw clenching, and shoulder tension follow. |
| 😴 Sleep before 11 PM | The Liver channel is most active 1–3 AM. Deep sleep during this window lets the Liver do its detoxification work. | Late nights in spring deplete Liver Blood and amplify next-day irritability. Protect the 1–3 AM window. |
The Kitchen Shift
March is the pivot from winter's heavy, warming kitchen to spring's lighter, greener one. The classical diet rule for spring is 省酸增甘 (shěng suān zēng gān) — ease off sour and add mildly sweet, neutral foods. Sour is the Liver's flavor, but in spring, when the Liver is already at peak strength, excess sour can over-restrain the Spleen. Mildly sweet, neutral foods — yam, jujube, rice, carrots — support the Spleen and keep the Liver-Spleen relationship balanced.
| Lean Into |
Ease Off |
| Leafy greens (spinach, bok choy, watercress) | Heavy lamb and beef stews |
| Light soups (tofu-tomato, goji-spinach) | Highly sour pickles and vinegar-heavy dressings |
| Pears, chrysanthemum tea, mung bean sprouts | Deep-fried and greasy foods |
| Chinese yam, jujube, carrots, rice congee | Ice-cold drinks and raw salads on cold mornings |
💡 Tip: "Ease off sour" does not mean "eliminate sour." A splash of black vinegar on greens or a few hawthorn slices in tea after a heavy meal still serves digestion well. The point is not to load up on sour when the Liver is already strong.
March Don'ts
| Avoid |
Why It Backfires |
| ❌ Activating the East sector with noise, wind chimes, or bright red decor | Star 7 (Robbery) sits in the East this year. Activation wakes the wrong energy. Keep it calm. |
| ❌ Renovating or drilling in the Southwest | Tai Sui occupies the Southwest in 2027. Ground disturbance here classically invites setbacks. |
| ❌ Stripping layers too early | March wind is the season's biggest external threat. An exposed neck or lower back lets 风邪 (fēng xié, wind pathogen) in fast. |
| ❌ Suppressing anger without outlet | Unexpressed Liver qi stagnates and surfaces as headaches, insomnia, or digestive upset. Move your body instead. |
| ❌ Overloading on sour foods | Sour feeds the Liver, but the Liver is already surging in March. Excess sour overwhelms the Spleen. |
Week-by-Week Plan
| Week |
Focus |
Tasks |
| Week 1 (Mar 1–7) | 惊蛰 awakening | Spring-clean the entrance and SE sector first. Ventilate daily. Check window screens and pantry for pests. Eat pears on 惊蛰 (Mar 6). Get a haircut booked for 龙抬头 (Mar 9). |
| Week 2 (Mar 8–14) | 龙抬头 + DST prep | 龙抬头 haircut and dragon foods (Mar 9). Begin shifting bedtime 15 minutes earlier by Wednesday to prepare for the clock change. Air bedding in morning sun. |
| Week 3 (Mar 15–21) | 春分 balance | Equinox on Mar 21 — the theme is balance. Audit light-and-dark zones at home; declutter the SE and S once more. Try the egg-standing custom. Begin shifting diet toward lighter, balanced plates. |
| Week 4 (Mar 22–31) | Late spring bridge | 观音诞 vegetarian meal (Mar 26). Easter renewal walk (Mar 28). Prepare a small ancestor space ahead of 清明 (Apr 5). Review the February wrapup tasks and close any gaps. |
