Every year the annual 飞星 (fēixīng) — flying stars — shift position at 立春 (lìchūn), Start of Spring. This year that falls on Thursday, February 4, 2027. Whatever cures and remedies you placed for 2026 are about to become irrelevant — and in some cases, actively unhelpful — once the new stars land. You have roughly 48 hours from the time you're reading this.
This is the annual maintenance that most feng shui practitioners consider non-negotiable. Think of it as changing the filter in your HVAC system: the system still runs without it, but it's not protecting you the way it should. The full 2027 flying star chart — including the new positions and what each star brings — is already published. This article doesn't repeat that chart. Instead, it gives you a practical, room-by-room sequence for taking down 2026 and putting up 2027.
If you haven't read the 2027 chart yet, start there first, then come back here for the swap process.

Why 立春, Not New Year's Day
A common misconception: the flying stars change on Chinese New Year's Day. They don't. In classical feng shui and BaZi, the year changes at 立春 — the solar term marking the start of spring. This year, 立春 falls on February 4, which is two days before Chinese New Year (February 6). The stars won't wait for the festivities to begin.
In 2026, the annual center star was 1. For 2027, the center star shifts to 9 — the Right Bixing star, a generally auspicious star associated with celebration and multiple blessings. Every other star moves accordingly. The sectors that needed cures in 2026 are not the same sectors that need cures now.
Step 1: Retire 2026 Cures
Walk through your home sector by sector and remove everything that was placed specifically for the 2026 annual chart. Here's what that typically includes:
| 2026 Sector | 2026 Annual Star | Typical 2026 Cure to Remove |
|---|---|---|
| South | Star 5 (Misfortune) | Metal cure — six-rod wind chime, heavy metal object, or metal Wu Lou |
| North | Star 2 (Illness) | Metal cure — brass Wu Lou, six metal coins, metal bell |
| Southwest | Star 3 (Conflict) | Fire element — red accents, candle, bright lamp |
| West | Star 7 (Robbery) | Water element — small water feature, blue or black accents |
| Any | Tai Sui (2026: West) | Pi Yao or Qilin figure facing west |
If a cure was placed for a permanent reason — say a mirror correction, a plant that's always been there, or a water feature tied to the home's base chart — that stays. Only remove items specifically placed for the 2026 annual stars.
Step 2: Clean and Store
Don't just throw retired cures into a box. These objects have been working for a year, absorbing and redirecting energy. Treat them with respect.
Metal Cures (Wind Chimes, Brass Objects, Coins)
Wipe down with a damp cloth. If tarnished, a gentle polish restores them. Wrap individually in soft cloth — not plastic bags, which trap stale qi — and store in a clean, dry place. These are reusable. You may need them again next year in a different sector.
Salt Cures
If you used a salt-water cure (a jar with salt, coins, and water), dispose of the contents carefully. Do not reuse the salt. Wrap the jar in newspaper and discard it with regular trash. Classically, salt cures absorb negative energy and should not be recycled.
Fire Element Cures (Red Items, Candles, Lamps)
These can be cleaned and stored for future use in a Fire-needing sector. Red fabric items can be washed. Candles that are mostly used up can be discarded.
Living Cures (Plants)
A plant placed as a Wood cure in 2026 doesn't need to be thrown away. Move it to a sector where Wood energy is welcome in 2027, or to a well-lit neutral spot. Healthy plants are always better kept than discarded.
Step 3: Place 2027 Cures
With 2026 cures removed and cleaned, place the 2027 remedies according to the 2027 chart. The key sectors that need attention this year:
| 2027 Sector | 2027 Star | Recommended Cure |
|---|---|---|
| North | Star 5 (Misfortune) | Heavy metal cure — six-rod metal wind chime, brass Wu Lou, or a cluster of six metal coins. Keep the area quiet and uncluttered. |
| West | Star 2 (Illness) | Metal cure — brass Wu Lou or metal bell. Avoid red and Fire here. |
| Northeast | Star 3 (Conflict) | Fire element — red accents, a lamp kept on during evening hours, or a red rug. |
| East | Star 7 (Robbery) | Water element to drain Metal star's negative side. Blue accents, a small water feature. |
| Southwest | Tai Sui (2027) | Keep quiet — no major renovation, no hammering. A Pi Yao or Qilin facing the direction, placed as a traditional gesture of respect. |
For the favorable sectors — the southeast (Star 8, prosperity) and the south (Star 4, academic and creative energy) — activation rather than suppression is the goal. Fresh plants, moving water, or simply good lighting work well. For the 2027 wealth corner setup in detail, see the dedicated article.
The Tai Sui Sector: Southwest
太岁 (Tài Suì), the Grand Duke Jupiter, sits in the Southwest for the entire 丁未 year. This is not a malevolent force — it's a gravitational authority. The traditional rule is simple: do not disturb. No renovations, no hammering, no digging in this sector. If your desk faces southwest, consider angling it slightly so you're not confronting the Tai Sui head-on. A Pi Yao (貔貅, píxiū) or Qilin figure placed in the sector facing southwest is the classical gesture of respect. It doesn't need to be large or expensive — intention is what matters.
Sui Po (岁破) — the year-breaker — sits opposite, in the Northeast. San Sha (三煞) occupies the West. Both sectors should also stay relatively undisturbed. Avoid starting renovations in these areas during 2027 if you can help it.
Room-by-Room Sequence
Rather than darting across the house randomly, work in a logical flow. Start at the front door and move clockwise:
| Order | Area | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Entryway / Front Door | Remove any 2026-specific items at the entry. Wipe the doorframe. Note which sector the front door falls in and place 2027 cure if needed. |
| 2 | Living Room | This is often where the most visible cures sit. Swap and rearrange. Take a photo after for your records. |
| 3 | Kitchen / Dining | Check stove and sink areas. If the Star 2 or 5 falls here in 2027, the metal cure goes near the stove area. |
| 4 | Bedrooms | Swap quietly. If a bedroom falls in the Star 5 (north) this year, the metal cure goes on the nightstand or dresser — heavy and still, not something that makes noise at night. |
| 5 | Home Office / Study | Align desk cures with 2027. The Star 4 (academic/creative) sits in the south this year — activate with Wood or Water there if your desk is nearby. |
| 6 | Bathrooms | Usually not cure-heavy, but check if any sector boundary crosses a bathroom. Keep them clean and well-ventilated as always. |
What Can Stay
Not everything moves. Here's what typically remains in place year to year:
- Base-chart remedies — cures tied to your home's permanent flying star chart (calculated from the construction year) don't change annually.
- General feng shui foundations — your front-door mat, entry mirror, water feature in the career sector, plants in your growth areas. These are about the Bagua, not the annual stars.
- Personal items with intention — a crystal you meditate with, a family photo arrangement, art you love. Intention-based pieces are not annual cures.
- Healthy plants — move them if needed, but don't discard them.
The 48-Hour Timeline
| When | Task | Time Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Monday evening (Feb 2) | Gather supplies: soft cloths, storage boxes, any new cure items you need. Review the 2027 chart one more time. | 30 min |
| Tuesday morning (Feb 3) | Remove 2026 cures sector by sector. Clean and wrap them for storage. | 60–90 min |
| Tuesday afternoon (Feb 3) | Place 2027 cures. Follow the room sequence. Take photos. | 45–60 min |
| Wednesday (Feb 3 evening) | Walk through and double-check. Does each sector's cure match the chart? Is anything cluttering the quiet zones? | 15 min |
| Thursday Feb 4 (立春) | Done. The year turns. Your home is ready. | — |
Total hands-on time: about two to three hours spread across two days. That's the price of a year of properly aligned energy. Worth it.
